One of the most popular figures in the life of Woodville and district, Mr Robert Roy Johnston, died in the Dannevirke Hospital yesterday after a long illness, at the age of 53 years. The late Mr Johnston, who was a returned soldier of the last war, was in business in Woodville for many years and a leader in community efforts and local body affairs until ill health compelled him to cease these activities some months ago. He gave good service as mayor for some years, was a member of the Fire Board, chairman of the School Committee, secretary of the A. and P. Association, a steward of the Woodville Jockey Club and a most enthusiastic worker for the Patriotic Society and the interests of ex-servicemen. Mr Johnston, who was also a keen sportsman and enjoyed a very wide circle of friends, was a Past master of Lodge Ruahine.
He is survived by his wife and two sons, Sergeant Robert Johnston, R.N.Z.A.F. and Sergeant Reginald Johnston, R.N.Z.A.F. (in England)
