At 12:35 this morning Ex-State Senator Jacob G. Heilman passed peacefully away at his beautiful home, at Jonestown, aged 53 years, 9 months, and 16 days. The deceased, up to within several weeks past, was in the enjoyment of his usual health, when he commenced to complain of insomnia. On the 3rd inst. While on his way to his office, and near his home, he fell to the ground in an unconscious condition, from which place he was picked up by friends and carried into his house. Dr, John C. Capp was summoned and everything possible was done for the Senator's relief, but he failed to rally and remained the greater portion of time up to his death in a semi-conscious condition. Drs. J. C. Capp and Wm. M. Guilford in diagnosing the case gave it as their opinion that Mr. Heilman was suffering from a clot of blood on the brain, occasioned by the rupture of a small blood vessel. The deceased was one of the foremost citizens of Jonestown, and was well known throughout the county and State. He was affable in his ways and possessed strong social traits, which won for him many earnest and true-hearted friends, who poignantly will mourn his untimely summons to "that bourne whence none returneth." In politics he was a power in the northern section of the county and held a high place in the affections of the people. In his death Jonestown has lost a citizen whom she will sadly miss. Those bright eyes of his are closed in death and that happy voice which brightened many a heavy heart, is silent like the tomb, but in memory's pictures he will long be remembered. His funeral will take place on Saturday afternoon from his late residence in Jonestown. The deceased was a son of Jacob Heilman and Susanna Stroh and first saw the light of day in Jonestown, May 26, 1836. He was educated in the schools of Jonestown, Lebanon Academy and Moravian Academy, at Lititz, Lancaster County. In early life he took up the study of law in the office of Gen. John Weidman, but soon relinquished it and entered the mercantile business in Jonestown with his brother and in 1862 connected himself with the Lebanon Mutual Fire Insurance company, the secretaryship of which he filled uninterruptedly up to the time of his death. Twice he enlisted and served in the War of the Rebellion and near Gettysburg was captured, but was released on parole at Hunterstown. In the National Guard he filled the Captaincy of Co. E, Eighth Regiment, during the railroad riots of 1877. Twice he was elected to the Legislature, in 1867 and 1868. In 1872 he represented the Lebanon and Dauphin district in the State Senate, and in 1875 was returned when Lebanon became a separate district, and served on the Committee of Ways and Means, Corporations, Centennial and several other important committees. He also filled many local positions of trust and honor. [The Daily News, Lebanon , Pennsylvania, 11 Mar 1890, Tue · Page 1]
