Mrs. Elizabeth Jane McLeod Walker O'Connor died Friday evening (October 24, 2008) at Satilla Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.
Energetic, resilient, strong-minded, these qualities embody the Jane that her friends and co-workers grew to know and love. From Australia to Ireland to Hawaii, Jane lived her life to the utmost, even in the face of illness, for "No" and "Can't" were not parts of her vocabulary.
Though a native of Atlanta, she has resided in Waycross for 35 years. Her education included a B. A. in Elementary Education from Georgia State University in 1970 and a Master in Elementary Education from Valdosta State University in 1989. She was employed as a 2nd and 3rd grade teacher for Waycross City School System (1970-73, 1974-79), an insurance agent for Horace Mann Insurance (1982-85), 3rd grade teacher for Brantley County School System (1985-87); afterwards, Jane taught multi-grade levels for the Ware County School System. She retired from Ware County School Systems after 26 years of service as a teacher and Rhodes Scholar. She was also a member of First Baptist Church and Georgia Teachers' Association. Her civic duties have included lead teacher at Wacona Elementary ('91-'92), Cub Scout Den Leader ('90-'92), President of Waycross Association of Educators (1979), Chairman of Education Committee for Waycross Junior Women's Club (1978), and 1976 Teacher of the Year at Alice Street Elementary School. In the summer of 1972, she was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship in India. In the summer of 1975, she was selected by the Board of Education to help develop a non-graded math curriculum.
She is the daughter of the late B. D. McLeod and Jeralda Adair McLeod. She is preceded in death by her sister, Evelyn McLeod.
Survivors include her husband, Dennis Gerald O'Connor of Waycross; one daughter, Laura Walker Morrison (husband Jeffrey) of Brunswick; one son, Robert Allen Walker, Jr. of Waycross; two grandchildren, Ansley and Walker Morrison; three sisters, Virginia Perteet (husband Charles) of Tiger, Joyce McCall (husband J. D.) of Lavonia, and Sue Tyler (husband Jess) of Stone Mountain; two brothers, Wayne McLeod of Buford, and Johnnie McLeod (wife Glenda) of Stone Mountain; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday (October 28, 2008) at First Baptist Church of Waycross. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7 until 9 p.m. Monday at Music Funeral Home.
