William Herrick Gordy passed away peacefully in his nome Friday, November 23, 2001. He has born July 4, 1924, the only son of Martha Herrick and William Thomas Gordy, in Wilmington, DE. He was a good son and much loved by his mother and Aunt Clara, as well as cousins Audrey and Vivian, whom he grew up with after his father passed away in 1939 and the 2 families moved together.
Bill graduated from P.S. duPont High School in Wilmington in 1942 and shortly thereafter entered the United States Air Force. World War II saw many heroes and our memories of those great persons who led the battle for freedom will live on in their memories and stories of their triumphs. Bill was a "Tail Bomber" with the "Mighty Eight" Air Force. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal 4 OLC's before being honorably dischared in September 1945.
He met and fell in love with Claire Levinia Pitts and they were married in Hurlock, MD on July 6, 1957. They lived in Claymont, DE until 1990 and had 1 daughter, Marcia, whom they both adored.
Bill was very artistic and witty and his talents were evident in his career in the advertising business. He was affiliated with Walsh Advertising, Inc. and Craig Advertising, both of Wilmington. During his career he was an award winner, long-standing member, and past president of The Ad Club of Wilmington.
After retiring from advertising, Bill worked seasonally for the Brandywine Raceway, first heading up valet parking and later in the clubhouse. He enjoyed the camaraderie at the track and was sorry to see it close.
After his wife's death in 1992, Bill moved to Billings, MD to be with his daughter and her family. He made some wonderful friends in his short time out west.
He is survived by his daughter, Marcia Gordy Honaker; son-in-law William D. Honaker; grandchildren William W. and Alexandra E. Honaker; and his cousins, Vivian Townsend of Wilmington, DE, Laurie Townsend of Detroit, MI and Jon Manchester of Newark, DE. He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Claire P. Gordy; and his mother and father.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial and interment will be held in the spring at the Gordy family plot in Riverview Cemetery, Wilmington, DE. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to your local VFW.
Dad, I love you with all my heart.
You will be greatly missed.
Happy sailing... Pussycat.
