William served as a First Sergeant, Company A, 8th Delaware Infantry during the Civil War.

The name Wm M. Holt, 23 yrs 5'6", Hazel eyes, Dark Hair from Cecil County, Md., appeared in the State of Delaware Archives of Civil War Volunteers.

Three entries were found, the first shows William as a Pvt in Co "E" 5th Regt Delaware. The second shows him in Co "G" 7th Regt Del as Sergeant and third was with his brother in Co "A" 8 Regt Delaware with a date of 30 Aug 1864 where he was the 1st Sergeant. His name was listed on the muster rolls for Arlington Heights, Va, June 5, 1865.

His brother Captain Robert John Holt was his company commander who is also buried in this cemetery, Section D Site 7643.

After the war, William began an occupation as a Watchmaker then later became a Jeweler.
