Woodville News I regret to have to chronicle the death of Mrs Thacker, wife of one of our oldest settlers. Mr Thacker left her in apparently her usual health at mid-day on Saturday, returning after 5 p.m. to find her dead in her chair. She had been engaged in jam making. It is an awful blow to Mr Thacker and his family, more especially coming at the present time, as they were all looking forward to taking part in the festivities in conjunction with the opening of the new Post Office, on Tuesday. Mr Thacker is the Government Overseer for Public Buildings and has taken more than ordinary interest in the erection of the local structure. Mrs Farrow (Dannevirke), Mrs S. Rabone, Mrs Spurrel, Mrs Forster and Messrs F. and J. Thacker are children of the deceased lady. She was a regular attendant at the Anglican Church. Great sympathy is extended to the family by all who knew them.
Woodville Examiner, Sudden Death
Quite a gloom was cast over the town on Saturday evening when it became known that Mrs Thacker, wife of Mr J. J. Thacker, had been found dead. Mr Thacker returned home from his duties as Inspector at the Post Office building about half-past five and found his wife seated in a chair quite dead. The doctor was immediately sent for and pronounced that death was due to heart failure. The late Mrs Thacker was afflicted with heart trouble and had been under medical care for some years. Deceased was of a bright, cheerful disposition and was highly respected and beloved by a large circle of friends, who will mourn her loss greatly.
Mr and Mrs Thacker arrived in the colony 80 years ago from Plymouth, England. The late Mrs Thacker was a native of Plymouth. They landed first in Napier, where they remained for about 12 years, Mr Thacker carrying on the business of a builder and contractor. Mr Thacker afterwards took up some land in the bushmills block and resided on the same for about 7 years and then they came to Woodville, where they resided practically ever since. Nine children are left to mourn the loss of their mother, six daughters and three sons. The daughters are Mesdames T. F. Quinlivan, junr., of Shortland, Hasting, J. Colmer, of England; G. Foster, of Palmerston North, E. B. Rabone, of Woodville; F. C. Farrow, of Dannevirke; and Miss Thacker. The sons are Messrs James Thacker, of Stratford; W. A. Thacker, of Christchurch; and F. G. Thacker, of Wanganui. The funeral takes place at 9 o'clock to-morrow morning.
