Jeptha Baxley enlisted March 14, 1862, at Abbeville, Alabama, for 3 years, and received a bounty for enlistment. He was sick and in the hospital during parts of October through December 1862 but returned to duty on December 10. In 1863 he was captured, paroled and exchanged at Camp Lee near Richmond, Virginia and given a 20-day furlough. He was captured again on September 19, 1864 at Winchester, Virginia, received from Harper's Ferry on September 26, and was a Prisoner of War at Point Lookout, Maryland. He was released on May 12, 1865.
