The funeral for Myrtle E. Viker, 84, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at East St. Olaf Lutheran Church near Byron, with the Rev. Darby Lawrence officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Viker, of rural Byron, died Thursday (Oct. 23, 2008) at Moore Elderly Care in Rochester, of complications from congestive heart failure. She had been a resident of the care center since June 2007.

Myrtle Elizabeth Bredesen was born Aug. 3, 1924, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester. She grew up on the family farm in Rock Dell Township, Olmsted County, and graduated from Rochester High School in 1942. She was a telephone operator at the old Worrell Hospital and then Bell Telephone Co., both in Rochester. On June 16, 1949, she married Marvin G. Viker at East St. Olaf Lutheran Church. The couple lived in Rochester where they were co-owners of Viker and Sorenson Sewer and Water Inc. for 26 years. They were also charter members of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Rochester. In 1978 they moved to Salem Township, Olmsted County, and farmed.

Mrs. Viker was a longtime member of East St. Olaf Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid. She also enjoyed music, playing the organ, caring for animals, and especially spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Dawn (Gerald) Wehrs of Rochester and Renate (Freidheim) Rathe of Voerde, Germany; two sons, Manford (Teresa Coughlin) of rural Byron and Marti (Barb Thiem) of Rochester; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Elvina (Larson) Bredesen; and two infant brothers.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville; from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home; and an hour before the service Monday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the cabin fund or kitchen fund at East St. Olaf Lutheran Church, or a charity of the donor's choice.
