Campbell, Jonathan, a member of the Mormon Battalion, Company E, was born in Massachusetts in 1812. He was married in the 22nd year of his life and became the father of five children. In 1839 or 1840 he was baptized by his brother, Benegar Campbell, gathered with the saints to Nauvoo early in 1844, was driven from Illinois across the Mississippi River and underwent many hardships during the general exodus. Having arrived on the Missouri River, he enlisted in the Mormon Battalion July 16, 1846, and in taking his departure for California, he left a loving wife and three small children and everything that was dear to him. He never saw his wife again, as she died at Council Bluffs, a victim to the many hardships to which she was exposed. Her three small children were brought to the "Valley" in the emigration of 1847, and after Bro. Campbell's discharge from the Battalion, he joined them in Utah in 1848. He located and helped to settle North Ogden, where he resided until the time of his death, which occurred there Nov. 24, 1886. Bro. Campbell died, as he had lived, a faithful Latter-day Saint.

Obituary Deseret News 15 Dec 1886 p.752: "...Jonathan Campbell was baptized in 1839 or 1840 by Benager Campbell. He gathered with the Saints to Nauvoo in the early part of the year 1844, previous to the death of the Prophet Joseph Smith. At the time the Saints were expelled, he and his family were driven across the river, underwent many hardships and finally arrived at Winter Quarters. When Captain Allen came to Council Bluffs to get 4 or 5 companies of men to go to Mexico. He enlisted in the Mormon Battalion 16 July 1846 and left with the camp of saints all that was near and dear to him, a loving wife and three small children. His wife, he never saw again as she died at Council Bluffs...(He never saw a child named Charity that was born and died with the mother after he left. vt.) Her 3 little children were brought to Salt Lake Valley with the pioneers. Jonathan went with the Battalion to California and received an honorable discharge. He came to the Salt Lake Valley by the southern route from Los Angeles in 1848. He lived in Salt Lake City until autumn of 1850, when he moved to Ogden with his wife and children. He had married Lucinda Shipman and wintered at Farr's Fort. In the spring of 1851 he helped to settle North Ogden and lived there the rest of his life. He was a teacher all this time except for the last two years."
