Irish-born, he was naturalized at Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania, in 1884, but that hadn't stopped him from voting for James Buchanan in 1860, Abraham Lincoln in 1864, and likely Ulysses S. Grant given that he worked in the latter candidate's campaign. His name was often spelled "Donaghue," which likely was the original spelling. It appears on his Civil War roster but afterward was exclusively "Donahue."

A Civil War veteran, the thirty-six-year-old enlisted for a two-year term in New York City August 5, 1861, at the stated age of twenty, suggesting either a clerical error or Daniel Donahue's skill at lying. He mustered into federal service at New York City August 8 as a private with Co. E, 37th New York Infantry and survived a wound to the right leg at the battle of Chancellorsville. He honorably discharged allegedly with his company on June 22, 1863, although the early date of that discharge suggests he may have discharged by surgeon's certificate discharge.

He married unk. and fathered Elsie (married John E. Shadler), Anna B. (married a Carroll), George (killed in an automobile accident), and Charles W. Shortly after the war, he was living in York Springs, Adams County, Pennsylvania, but allegedly lived the last thirty years of his life in Harrisburg. He appears in no census while living in Pennsylvania.

On June 15, 1903, he entered the soldiers' home at Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, but discharged at his request March 30, 1905. He later had stays in commensurate facilities at Johnson City, Tennessee, Hampton, Virginia. He returned to Dayton on August 28, 1912, leaving the system for the final time on May 13, 1915. His obituary in the Harrisburg Telegraph makes no mention of his stays in the soldiers' homes. He died at his daughter Elsie's home, but his body was shipped to Hampton for burial.
