Sports Businessman. In 1977, he became a co-owner of the Buffalo Braves of the National Basketball Association (NBA). At the end of the 1978, he negotiated a franchise swap of the Braves for the Boston Celtics and became sole owner of the Celtics in 1979. During his ownership, he signed Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish, known as the "Big Three", which resulted in the Celtics winning the 1981 NBA Championship. In 1983, he became the owner of the Memphis Rogues soccer team, a franchise of the North American Soccer League (NASL) and was part owner of the Tampa Bay Rowdies. He was also a successful thoroughbred race horse breeder, being named Breeder of the Year by the Thoroughbred Owners' and Breeders' Association, in 1988 and 2000. In 1995, he was inducted into the Calder Race Course Hall of Fame and received the National Eclipse Award of Merit in 2002. He died of leukemia.
