Preceded in death by his wife of 76 years, Becie L. Beaver Compton, on April 3, 2003, and a daughter, Evelyn Oberman. He and his family moved to Washington, D.C. in 1927, where he apprenticed under a Swiss watchmaker, later opening a business with his three brothers. Known as Compton Brothers, they were watchmakers to several presidents; congressmen, and senators, and maintained clocks at the U.S. Capitol. They also owned a farm in Loudoun County, VA, where they produced wheat and later sod that was used at the Arlington National Cemetery. Rev. Compton pastored the London Track Primitive Baptist Church in Delaware and the Columbia Primitive Baptist Church in Burtonsville, MD.
Survivors include children, James A. and Richard L., and Betty Dodds Putkovich; grandchildren, Miriam Mendel, William & Craig Compton, Susan Marsden, Eric Compton, Alice Slavik Richard Compton, Jr., Edward Compton, Teresa Nathan, Jennifer Grover, and Rebecca Spolnicki; 23 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Ruby Goodman & Janie Kellam.
Interment followed funeral services conducted Saturday, May 5, 2007.
