MARY ( COLLINS) KNOWLES (90 yrs. 3 months) was born Aug. 13, 1815 Brookfield, Madison county, NY the first of four children born to Sheffield Collins and Eliza Knowles Collins Scarritt. Her father was one of the first settlers and business leaders in Brookfield, New York. At the tender age of nine, Mary lost her father when he accidentally died by falling into a vat of boiling lye at a Potash factory he owned.

Her mother, Eliza) moved Mary and her sisters, Lydia, Hannah and Ann Maria Collins, to Smyrna, NY. It was there on May 6, 1830 that Mary met and married Henry A. In the summer of 1856 they loaded up their household goods into a wagon and with 5 cows started over land for Iowa, arriving at Iowa Falls 6 weeks after starting. In Aug. of that same year they came to Humboldt county and settled on a farm near Lotta Creek, now Livermore, IA where they lived till 1882 when they moved to Humboldt, Iowa where they resided for 10 years.

In 1892 they returned to Livermore, Iowa where her husband died Dec. 9, 1905. She then made her home with her daughter Mrs. Lucy Letita Stone and her daughter in-law, Mrs. A. E. Knowles, until Nov. 12, 1895, when she died.

Mary was born into the Society of Friends (Quakers) and lived a simple, Christian life till her death. Many are those who have felt the hospitality of her home, while her hands were always ready to minister to the sick or distressed.
