He was born October 31, 1921, the son of Howard and Lavinia Broaddus Calhoun. He attended Temple Schools and Temple Junior College. He joined the Navy for World War II and was recalled to serve in the Korean conflict. Joe and Virginia Boyd married during the war years and were blessed with two sons. Joe and Virginia enjoyed fifty-nine years of beautiful marriage. Joe was a printer for the Temple Daily Telegram a few years, and then traveled several states for many years as a clothing manufacturing representative. After his retirement in 1980 he worked as a part-time employee for Leon Valley Golf Course. There he made many friends and enjoyed many rounds of golf. This part-time job was very enjoyable for him and lasted twenty years. He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia and his oldest son Joe Jr. He is survived by one son, Charles Calhoun of California; two granddaughters, Melissa Gastineau of Sugarland, TX and Courtney Calhoun of Cypress, TX; two great-grandchildren, Lauren and Joshua Gastineau.
