As a young boy Milford received the nickname "Hunky" from his aunt and the name stuck with him for the rest of his life. During his high school years, Hunky played football and basketball for the Clintonville Truckers. He then joined the United States Coast Guard in June of 1942 being honorably discharged in April of 1946.
In 1948, Hunky took a job with the Clintonville Police Department and became Chief of Police in 1972 later retiring from the police force in 1979. On June 23, 1951, Hunky was united in marriage to Evelyn Witzke at the St. Martin Lutheran Church in Clintonville.
Hunky was very active in his community. Some of his memberships include Past President of the Clintonville Lions Club, President of the Inner City Shrine in Green Bay, and was a member of the Clintonville Masonic Lodge #197, where he served as High Priest and also President of Commandry.
Hunky enjoyed hunting pheasants in South Dakota, fishing, golfing and was a very good bowler. He bowled 30 years in Nationals, and is in the Clintonville Bowling Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the Clintonville Trap League and umpired many softball games. Perhaps his most favorite pastime was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; two daughters: Cindy (Tim) Pavlick, Clintonville; Robin (David) Gehling, Clintonville; five grandchildren: Brian (Seneca) Pavlick, Appleton; Jenny (John) Kaphingst, Appleton; Matthew (Ginny) Gehling, TN; Andrew (Megan) Gehling, NC; Jaymie (Adam) Noack, Eau Claire; 13 great-grandchildren: Dakota, Alicia, Jhaneva, Bryce, Cyle, Triston, Kaitlin, Emilee, Elijah, Scout, Tyler, Marshall, and Kylee. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Hunky was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sylvia Juedes.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 18, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Clintonville with the Rev. Roberta Thomson officiating with Masonic services being provided by the Clintonville Masonic Lodge #197. Interment will follow at the Graceland Cemetery in Clintonville. Military graveside honors will be provided by members of the Clintonville American Legion Post #63 and VFW Post #664. Friends may call at the Eberhardt-Stevenson Funeral Home in Clintonville on Friday from 5-8 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the services.
Hunky's family would like to thank the staff of Heartland Hospice, especially Krista, Clara Mae and Bill for the wonderful care they provided. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Heartland Hospice would be appreciated by his family.
