The Right Reverend Franklin Spencer Spalding was the third Episcopalian bishop of Utah from 1904-1914. He was killed in an auto accident in 1914. In 1904 he was an avowed socialist who spoke up regularly against the need for such a large military in our country. The night before his death in 1914, he spoke in Provo calling the U.S. military nothing more than a "standing committee for war."

He was born March 16th 1865 in Erie Pennsylvania. His father was the late John Franklin Spalding, Protestant Episcopal Bishop of Colorado, 1868-1902. His mother Lavinia Deborah Spencer Spalding. His brothers are John and William Spalding and sisters Elisabeth and Sarah Spalding. He died September 25th 1914. He was 49 years old.
