Mrs. Eliza Earl
Last evening at 8:45 o'clock occurred the death of one of Kalamazoo's most respected ladles, and one who has occupied a prominent place during an exceedingly long residence in this city and vicinity, Mrs. Eliza Earl. There were few ladies who possessed the remarkable strength and energy that has characterized Mrs. Earl even in her very old age, for up until last May she was considered to possess a wonderful amount of physical and mental activity. On May 30 however, she was taken ill and within 24 hours she declined from a state of seeming perfect health and strength to a condition of feeble old age. From that time on she was an invalid and her death was not unlocked for at any time. Mrs. Earl's maiden name was Eliza Ruttan, and she was born In New Providence, New Jersey, July 22,1805. She was married in that state to the late Barney Earl, who died some fifteen years ago, and in 1880 they removed to Cooper, this county. Nearly thirty years ago they came to Kalamazoo, which continued to be the family home. Mrs. Earl was the mother of eight children, but only three survive her. They are Stephen G. Earl of this city, Albert G. Earl of Utah, and Miss Minnie Earl of this city. The deceased was an earnest Christian woman, and a member of the First Presbyterian church. Her character was that of a noble, unselfish woman, one whose good works and devotion to others has often been remarked. The funeral will be held from the residence, 620 Academy street tomorrow at 8 o'clock. Kalamazoo Daily Telegraph October 15, 1890 page 7
