J. Reed Smith age 89 passed away on October 16, 2008 at Elk Meadows Assisted Living Center in Oakley, Utah.


Reed was born August 18, 1919 in Torrey, Utah to William C. Smith and Ruby Perry Smith. He was raised in Torrey and graduated from Wayne High School. He attended Brigham Young University for one year before being drafted into the army. He was a veteran of World War II serving from April 1941 to October 1945 in the 74th Field Artillery Battalion in the European Theater of Operation. He married Ardis Williams on October 4, 1943 in Teasdale, Utah. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. They had two sons. Ardis passed away on March 6, 1965. He then married Laraine W. Jensen on February 23, 1967 in the Salt Lake Temple. Laraine passed away on November 23, 2007. Reed spent his early years as a farmer and stockman raising cattle and sheep in the Teasdale and Torrey area in Wayne County, Utah. In 1957, he moved to Salt Lake City, and attended Stevens Henager School of Buisness and graduated with a degree in accounting. He worked for the J I Case company as an accountant from 1958 until 1970. He then worked for Midwest Office Supply until he retired in 1985. He was an active member of the Parley's 2nd Ward of the LDS Church serving as Ward Financial Clerk for 10 years and Stake Clerk for the Parley's Stake for 8 years.


He is survived by his two sons, Gordon (Sherie) Green River, WY; Michael (Susan) Hoytsville, UT; nine grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.


Funeral Services will be held in the Parley's 2nd Ward Chapel, 1870 East Parley's Canyon Boulevard on October 22 at 12 noon. A viewing will be held on October 21 from 6-8 p.m. at the Parley's 2nd Ward Chapel and one hour before the Funeral Services.
Burial will be in the Teasdale Utah City Cemetery.
