She was born Sylvia V. Mounter on April 19, 1925 to Henry Richard and Sarah Viola (Bussert) Mounter at Rice, near Colville. The family later moved to Orin and then to Kettle Falls. In 1938, they came to the Leavenworth-Peshastin-Dryden areas, where she completed her education and worked at the River Terrace Cafe.
On Aug. 10, 1942, she married Burl W. Whaley at Wenatchee. They lived at Lake Wenatchee, Leavenworth and later the Peshastin-Dryden area, where she packed fruit for many years at Peshastin Fruit Growers. They later moved to Wenatchee, where she worked with her husband in the operation of several service stations. In 1979, they moved to Manson, where they owned and operated Whaley's North Shore Inn, until 1997, when they returned to Wenatchee.
Sylvia loved her husband and family dearly. She was loved and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Survivors include her husband, Burl of the family home; three daughters, Phyllis Stegeman and her husband Bert of Leavenworth, Ina Ruth Pearson and her husband, Marvin of Plain and Beryl Louise Smith and her husband, Steve of Pittsburg, PA; one son, Rick Whaley and friend, Candy Gibson of Wenatchee; two sisters, Florence Darlington of Cashmere and Audrey Brender of Wenatchee; brother, Paul Mounter of Peshastin; seven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Douglas and Donovan Mounter, four sisters, Beverly Agnew, Edna Hamilton, Phyllis Mounter and Una Coonc.
A Funeral Service of Commemoration to Celebrate the Life of Sylvia V. Whaley will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday morning, Aug. 9, 2001 in the Ward's Funeral Chapel, with Steve Smith, officiating. Concluding service and interment will follow in the Peshastin Cemetery.
Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of the arrangements.
