He taught school and was principal of schools in Holly Pond, Trimble, and Luverne, Alabama. He married Maude Evelyn Lett on October 15, 1903. Their oldest child, Thomas Richard, Jr. was born in Alabama. The other children were born in Florida. His talents included music and public speaking. He even preached some. He farmed, worked as a building contractor, and worked as an electrician.
