Harold Reed Bailey Jr., 79, of Warrensburg, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008, at the Missouri Veterans Home. He was born March 30, 1929, in Kansas City, the son of Harold Reed and Agnes Baird Bailey. Reed attended Southwest High School, Kansas City, and graduated from Missouri Military Academy in Mexico. He attended the University of Kansas School of Engineering and received a degree as an electrical engineer. While a student at KU, he was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. As a participant in Naval ROTC, he served on Navy ships each summer throughout college. After graduating from KU, Reed received a commission as an officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve and served for three years. Following his military service, he was employed by Missouri Public Service in Sedalia, where he met and married Mary Jane Scotten. The couple moved to Warrensburg in 1959. Reed later accepted a position at Whiteman Air Force Base and remained there until he retired as deputy civil engineer in 1988. During his career, he belonged to several engineering clubs and was licensed as a registered professional engineer. As a Warrensburg resident for nearly 50 years, community service was important to Reed. He served on the Warrenburg City Council and the Planning and Zoning Commission. He was active in 4-H and Boy Scouts and was a member of the Kiwanis Club and NARFE. Reed was a devoted member of Christ Episcopal Church, Warrensburg, where, throughout the years, he served in many capacities. He provided strong leadership for the congregation in his roles of senior warden, junior warden, treasurer, Sunday school teacher and acolyte trainer. He was a faithful and regular attendant of services and activities. Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane, of the home; a daughter, Anne Selig and her husband, Bill, of Groveland, Mass; two sons, Mark and his wife, Karen, of Kansas City, and Peter, of Dallas, Texas; six grandchildren, Madison, Sean and Nicholas Bailey, and Kate Sarah and Scott Selig; and a sister, Jean Knox, and her husband, Scotty, of Brighton, Colo. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Christ Episcopal Church, Warrensburg. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Wornall Road and Meyer Boulevard, Kansas City, followed by burial at Forest Hills Cemetery, Kansas City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society in care of Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home, Warrensburg.
