The active church leader was the father of Elder Robert L. Backman, a member of the presidency of the First Quorum of Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Mr. Backman, a senior partner in the law firm Backman, Clark and Marsh, was involved in civic activities. He was a member and president of the Salt Lake City Board of Education prior to serving on the state board. He was also director of the Days of '47 activities and a member of the Sigma Pi Fraternity, Kiwanis Club, Sons of Utah Pioneers, and the Bonneville Knife and Fork Club.
Mr. Backman served the LDS Church in the South African Mission, and later served as president of that mission. He was also in the presidency of the Temple Square Mission, as well as serving as a guide on Temple Square.
Mr. Backman was also a bishop of the 34th and Yale LDS Wards and also served as stake Sunday school superintendent.
Funeral Services will begin at noon on April 23 in the Grant 4th LDS Ward Chapel, 1111 East Charlton Avenue. Friends may call at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple Street from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on April 22 and at the Ward Chapel from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. April 23.
Burial will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
