Nursing Sister Wake died of severe burns sustained during the two-hour German raid when airships bombed the 1st Canadian General Hospital at Etaples, in France, on 19 May 1918. Sixty-six patients and staff (including two other Canadian nursing sisters: Nursing Sister Margaret LOWE and Nursing Sister Katherine Maud Mary MacDONALD) died as a result of this raid.
