MRS. M. K. UPJOHN TAKEN BY DEATH
Widow of Late Dr. Henry Upjohn Graduate of State University, Mrs. Millie Kirby Upjohn, 68, widow of the late Dr. Henry Upjohn and one of the best-known women in Kalamazoo, died at her home, 617 South Park street, Sunday evening. The deceased, was the daughter of the into William S. Kirby, a pioneer resident of Michigan. She was born in Saratoga county, New York, Sept. 28, 1862. She received her early education at the seminary at Richland and later attended the Mt. Holyoke school in this city. She was graduated in 1871.
STUDIED TO AID HUSBAND. She married Dr. Henry Upjohn December 18, 1872. Recognizing that she could be of more service to her husband, who was a practicing physician in Kalamazoo at the time, she entered the medical department at the University of Michigan and was graduated from that school four years later, when she returned to this city. Her husband died in 1887, leaving her with six children, five sons and a daughter, to care for. She devoted her time to rearing her family. She was an active member of the First Methodist church and showed a special interest in the Foreign missionary cause and in a quiet way did much for local charities.
SURVIVED BY 5 SONS. She is survived by her sons, Dr. Lawrence M. Upjohn. East Orange, N. J.; William Kirby Upjohn, Kansas City, Mo.; U. Carl Upjohn, Chicago; Hubert S. Upjohn, Pasadena. Calif.; and Donald H. Upjohn, Salem, Ore. The daughter, Ida Rowena, died at the age of 18 years. She was a sister-In-law of Drs. W. E. Upjohn and J. T. Upjohn. One brother, W. S. Kirby, of Galesburg, a sister, Mary Kirby, of Kalamazoo, and 13 grandchildren, also survive. Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed.
