Samuel Alden enlisted at Scipio Township, Hillsdale County, Michigan as a Private in the Independent Company of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on February 25, 1864, for 3 years of service, at 19 years of age; he was mustered in on April 5, 1864. He died of disease (inflammation of the brain) at the First Division Hospital, near Petersburg, Virginia, on August 10, 1864. (The U.S., Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles, 1861-1865 records his death location at Point of Rocks, Chesterfield County, Virginia.)
