On March 22, 1937, he married Margaret J. Derifield at Tacoma and they made their first home in Leavenworth. In 1941, they moved to Kelso and in 1948, they moved to Cashmere where they purchased the Cashmere Hotel and converted it into a Rest Home, which they later sold to Mr. & Mrs. Dronen in 1955. They returned to Leavenworth, where they purchased Shelton's Tavern. On February 3, 1959, he married Othello Richardson Skelton in Coeur d'Alene, ID. They made their home in Leavenworth, where Shag owned and operated the Wenatchee Valley Auto Freight from 1959, until his retirement in 1980. He was very active in the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club, and for many years coached and was involved with Little League Baseball. He was instrumental in the Leavenworth Improvement For Everyone (L.I.F.E.) project, was a past member and president of the Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce; past member and president of the Washington State Autumn Leaf Festival Association, past member of the Chelan County Fair Board and a member of the Leavenworth Golf Club.
Shag is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Dwight Kiehn of Peshastin, three sons and daughters-in-law, Ken and Kay Coffin of Leavenworth, Jack Coffin of Seattle and Mike and Tammy Coffin of Cashmere; special friend and caregiver, Alicia Orozco; twelve grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Othello in 1994; one son, Kenneth Lee; daughter, Pat Hatmaker; brother, Elrey; and three sisters, Dorothy, Helen and Nina.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date in the Mt. View Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Central Washington Hospice, P.O. Box 1887, Wenatchee, WA 98807-1887 or The Upper Valley Historical Society, P.O. Box 2189, Leavenworth, WA 98826. Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of the arrangements.
