Svend H Dale was born in Bergen, Norway 5 May 1857 to Hendrick Swendson and Jorund Knutson.

He changed his last name to Dale. His siblings used last name Swenson.

His parents came to the U.S. with children in 1867 to Ettrick twshp. His father had been a sailor but engaged in farming in Ettrick until his death 12 Jan 1896. His mother died Sept 1897. He went to school in Beaver Creek and farmed there until 1913 moving to a farm near Galesville.

He married Katherine Ragna Herreid in 7 June 1882. She was born in Beaver Creek to Nels O and Thone (Kittlestad) Herreid. Her parents died in Beaver Creek 1902 and 1908.

Mr and Mrs Dale were the parents of at least nine children as of 1917:
1. Helmer N (deceased at age 3)
2. Josephine Tonetti, Mrs Lewis O Instenes, a jeweler at Blair, children Stanley Leroy Instenes/Stennes and Ardyce Catherine,
3. Helmer N who resides on farm in Beaver Creek, married Blanche
4. Sanford Cornelius
5. Hilda Berthine (1891) was at asylum 1910-1930
6. Gilfred Roy, married Mabel Shulman
7. Norval Clarence,
8. Francis
9. Alice Eunice Bohri (1905-1984) of Orange, NJ
