Mrs. Lizzie Hartman of Richland celebrated her eighty-fifth birthday yesterday with a host of happy memories to share with her husband Jacob, who passed his ninetieth birthday last March 2 and to whom she's been married for 68 years.
Last night as the two were sitting in their rocking chairs with Hartman playing his accordion they were visited by some of their 16 children, who dropped in to wish their mother a happy birthday.
Although Hartman's eyesight is failing and his wife is suffering from a cold, both are in good health and cheerful. They do light chores around the house and Mrs. Hartman still does some cooking.
Mrs. Hartman, the former Lizzie Fetter, was sixteen when she and Jacob were married back on October 15, 1887. Rev. A. J. Bachman officiated in the Evangelical and Reformed Church at Schaefferstown, where both hold membership. Las October, they marked their 68th wedding anniversary, which must be a record, at least in this area.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Hartman were born and reared in the Schaefferstown area. After their marriage they lived there and Hartman worked as a carpenter.
They moved to Richland 46 years ago and still occupy the same residence. Hartman was employed at the Wiest Cigar Factory in Richland and retired only five years ago after he suffered a light stroke.
He is fond of his accordion and plays with fine spirit. In his younger days Hartman was a member of the 18th Regiment Band at Schaefferstown. He is one of the oldest living members of the group, now disbanded. There will be a family dinner on Sunday in celebration of Mrs. Hartman's birthday.
The couple had 16 children, of whom three died in infancy. Their living children are: Frances (Mrs. Daniel Moyer) of Newmanstown; Ida (Mrs. Scott Sweigart) of Denver; Florence (Mrs. Harry Moore) of Newmanstown; Ralph of Norristown; Howard of Baltimore, Md.; Mrs. Sue Souders of Palmyra; Katie (Mrs. Ray Hawkins) of Lebanon; Sallie (Mrs. George Bowers) of Richland; Lizzie (Mrs. George Schlappich) with whom they reside; Curtis of Myerstown; Clara (Mrs. Edgar Weatherholtz) of Levittown, and June (Mrs. Elroy Smith) of Newmanstown.
They have 47 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. [Lebanon Daily News, Lebanon, Pa., Saturday May 5, 1956]
