Anna was born to Peter and Rachel Murjer Rice in Syracuse, New York. She married Cornelius Van Tassel there on october 27, 1832. The couple than moved to LaPorte County, Indiana, where they had seven children: Silas, Eliza, Gilbert, Diantha, Ellen J., Martha, and Maria. After her husbands death in 1857, Anna lived alone for many years in the town of LaPorte. In the 1870's, Anna moved with her daughter Diantha and son-in-law John W. Edwards to Idaho Springs, Colorado, where John explored mining interests. Anna and her son-in-law would both die before the turn of the century, but Diantha would live on several more years.
