ATKINS: David C. Spurgeon, age 71, died Friday, October 3, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following an extended illness.
A Memorial Visitation will be held at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Atkins from 4:30 to 7:30 PM, on Tuesday, October 7, 2008. Private Graveside Services will be held at Parker's Grove Cemetery near Shellsburg. In lieu of flowers, a Memorial Fund has been established. Phillips Funeral Home in Vinton is in charge of arrangements.
David was born January 14, 1937 in Cedar Rapids to Homer J. and Hazel (Cutter) Spurgeon, who preceded him in death. He graduated from Shellsburg High School in 1955. From 1959 to 1961 he served his nation in the US Army.
David farmed in Shellsburg and lived his entire life in Atkins. He was united in marriage to Julia Sims and they celebrated forty-five years of marriage..
He is survived by his wife, Julia of Atkins; his daughter, Stephanie (Tom) Busby of Arlington Heights, IL; his son, Stephan (Vicki) Spurgeon of Newhall; his granddaughter, Allison Busby; his brother, Gordon Spurgeon of Shellsburg; and two nieces.
His family would like to express special thanks to Kristin and Bruce, Dr. Bell of St. Luke's Hospice and the T.C.U. Staff.
