JOHN FRELAN WINTERS was born on July 13, 1814, in Giles County, Tennessee. John was the second son of James and Rhoda Beal Winters. He and his wife, Margaret Ella Miller immigrated to Texas in 1834 and they settled in what is now Walker County.

A veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto , John Winters enlisted in the Texas cause on September 18, 1836 and was assigned to Lieutenant James T. Sprowl's Company, located at Velasco. At San Jacinto however, he was a member of Captain William Ware's Company, and he received a Donation Certificate good for 640 acres of land because of his participation. Mr. Winters also received 320 acres for the time he served in the Texas army.

After the death of his wife Mr. Winters married Henrietta R. Ramsdell. John F. Winters died January 16, 1864 and is buried in the Winters Memorial Cemetery, located on land that belonged to a Miss Hoat, about 10 miles east of New Waverly, Walker County, Texas.

John and Margaret gave birth to eight children, Ruth, Rhoda, Bettie, Sherman, James, John F. Jr., William, and Ella. Henrietta, his second wife bore him two children, Cora, and Gertrude.

In 1936, the State of Texas erected a Star and Wreath Centennial Monument at the site of his grave.
