James was the son of James L. Dillon Sr. and Alice Bertha Clyburn.

During World War II, he was an engineer on the 389th Bomb Group which had Ludwigshaven, Germany as its target - Mission #38. The 389th flew home alone over France. German fighters made repeated attacks and the goup lost four aircraft including James', known as the "Blunder Bus," and it crashed at LePlesis, France.
