Lynn P. Barkhimer, 83, of Larkspur Lane died at 5:25 a.m. Sunday, May 30, 1999, at Columbus Regional Hospital emergency room.

He was a 1933 graduate of Columbus High School, co-owner of Parker and Barkhimer Grocery and worked in the receiving department at Hamilton-Cosco. He was appointed to replace H. Karl Volland as city clerk-treasurer in 1952 and was elected to the next four-year term. He was elected Bartholomew County auditor in 1958 and 1962, serving until Jan. 1, 1966, when he became assistant secretary-treasurer of Citizens Savings and Loan, now Union Federal Savings Bank. In 1969, he was named president and managing officer of Citizen's Savings and Loan. He retired Feb. 1, 1981.

He received the Columbus Jaycee Good Government Award in 1953 and was presented the Outstanding Citizen's Award by the Exchange Club. He received the 1999 Paul Harris Award from Columbus Rotary Club.

He was director, treasurer and board member of Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce, board member and treasurer of The Commons and was past president of the Exchange Club.

Barkhimer was a member of River Rats and a former member of the board of directors of the Senior Center and Bartholomew County Humane Society. He was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher, assistant treasurer and treasurer and chairman of the board of trustees. He was a 50-year member of St. John's Masonic Lodge and Columbus High Twelve Club.

Funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at Myers Funeral Service, Reed and Jewell Chapel on 25th Street, with the Revs. James E. Gentry and Allan K. Wilson officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until time of service Thursday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church.

Born Jan. 27, 1916, in Columbus, he was the son of John W. and Ada A. Sprague Barkhimer. He married Margaret L. Thompson Aug. 28, 1935, in Columbus. She died Sept. 25, 1996.

Survivors include a son, Robert L. Barkhimer of Poway, Calif.; grandchildren, Jeffrey L. Barkhimer of Escondido, Calif., Beth Anne Schaldach of Alpine, Calif., and Brian D. Barkhimer of Santee, Calif.; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul W. Barkhimer.
