(Kent Kooi and Kathy Weaver have been researching the men of the 4th Iowa Cavalry for over a year, and are preparing a presentation to donate to several Iowa county historical societies in addition to updating their memorials. Frederick Whiting was a member of the 4th Iowa Cavalry. The following history was submitted by Kathy.)

Frederick Shearer Whiting was a resident of Fairfield, Iowa, when he enlisted 2 Nov 1861 at the age of 25. He was appointed 1st Lieutenant 24 Nov 1861 when he mustered in Co M 4th Iowa Cavalry. Promoted to Captain 19 Jan 1864. Served with the Company in the field throughout the war, sometimes in command of battalion. Mustered out as Full Captain with company on 8 Aug 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia.

Frederick married Anna Louise Rommel on 31 Mar 1864 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, and they had seven children. Frederick worked as a contractor/carpenter in Polk County through the 1905 Census. Between 1905 and 1910 they located to Portland, Oregon. Frederick resided at National Homes for Disabled Soldiers in both Oregon and California. He was discharged from the soldier's home in California Oct 1912.

Frederick died Nov 1912 in Portland, Oregon at the age of 76 years 8 months 4 days. Services were held in Portland and interment at Des Moines, Iowa. Anna continued to live in Oregon where she died in 1921 at age 78 years. She is buried in Des Moines next to her husband.
