Elbert was a hard working man. He was fondly called "Pop" by his many grandchildren. Elbert who was hard of hearing from birth, was an engineer on a railroad train, and also fought in the war. He raised a family and later in life, enjoyed taking care of his garden and chickens. He was the local barber to many neighbors and family; cutting hair outside under a big tree. Although Pop was hard of hearing and his hearing progressively worsened, he would pull up a chair and watch the weather on the television every night; he also liked to watch boxing matches and baseball. His daughter recalls that it was surprising how he could pronounce all the player's names correctly, even though he never heard them aloud.
