Gladys was born in Parma, Missouri in 1913 to Charles Baker Brown and Pearl Gertrude Rose. She was one of 16 children sired by Mr. Brown. She married Irvin Belford on August 22, 1933 in New Jersey and was the mother of four sons (Irvin, Bradley, Bruce and Curtis). She was a homemaker who loved to bake and make clothing for her family. She had one of the first laryngectomies in medical history when she was diagnosed with cancer in 1945. She was a devout Christian and prayed that God would spare her so she could raise her boys. She survived, surprising even her doctors, but the big C returned and took her life at the age of 63. 17 grandchildren also survived her.
