Her husband, Dexter Elliott Chipps, Sr., was a homicide victim. On July 17, 1926, he was shot to death by the famous Fundamentalist Baptist preacher, Rev. John Franklyn Norris. Chipps had confronted Norris about his fanatical anti-Catholic campaign. The case was covered nation-wide in all the major newspapers.
