This famous case was covered nation-wide in all the major newspapers.

Unarmed, he was shot 4 times with a handgun by the famous Fundamentalist Baptist preacher, Rev. John Franklyn Norris, in an anteroom to the study of Norris, in the First Baptist Church. Chipps confronted Norris about his fanatical anti-Catholic campaign. The only eyewitness was a 14 year old, Carl Glaze. ("Time" magazine, November 15, 1926) -("...Glaze has seen sufficient to wreck the Parson's plea of self-defense.", "Time" magazine, August 9, 1926) - Norris was acquitted.
