Joseph was a son of Capt. Richard Cooper & Hannah Sampson.

He was married on 29 Jul 1791 at the First Parish Church of Plymouth by Rev.Chandler Robbins to Lucy Taylor.

They had 9 children: Joseph; George; George; Edward Taylor; Lucy Taylor; Lucy Taylor; William Brewster; Mary Bartlett; and James Bartlett Cooper.
