There is a newspaper account published in New Albany telling how George died. George was killed by "friendly fire" by Union soldiers. The Indiana Home Guard thought the passing boat on the Ohio River contained Confederates, and the Union Army thought the Indiana Home Guard were Rebels. Neither had flags showing whose side they were fighting for. George was ordered to fire a shot into the pilot-house and someone from the pilot house fired a shot back, killing George. George was the only casualty of the event.
