John L. Holley, 94-year-old Guntown resident who volunteered with the Confederate Army as a youth of 15 and served until surrender of his unit in 1865, died yesterday following a long illness. Funeral services will be held at the Guntown Baptist Church this afternoon at 3 o'clock with the Rev, H. GO. West, assisted by the Rev. J. A. Landers and the Rev. L. P. Jumper officiating. Burial will be in Campbelltown Cemetery with Nick Water in charge. Mr. Holly is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ed Whitten and Mrs. Linnie Matthews, both of Guntown three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He volunteered during the third year of the Civil War with the 10th Mississippi Cavalry under Col. Cox and served until his unit surrendered at Macon on April 1865. Mr. Holley had lived at Guntown for many years and was one of he best known and best liked residents of his community. Despite his age, he had remained active until his last illness. Active pallbearers at services today will be M. S. Mullinix Pleas Brown, R. B. O'Shields, Gene Watson, W. S, Bryson, 0. P. Norton, Dr. H. A. Stokes, and John G. Underwood. Honorary pallbearers will be J. R. Clayton, I. 0. Patton, Will Rutherford, L. A. Bryson, B. L. Pettigrew, Ashby Green, Clyde Harris, Hoyle Patton, D. L. Vinson, Babe Braden, Enoch Ford and Miff Watson.
