Leavenworth - Cecil G. Mathena, 84, a resident of Leavenworth for the past 48 years, died on Saturday morning, April 22, 1989, in the Cashmere Convalescent Center.

He was born on April 14, 1905, to Louis and Ursa (Long) Mathena at Hartington, Neb. The family moved to Adams, ND, in 1906 where he grew up and attended school.

He married Gladys L Thompson on Oct. 27, 1928, at Carsen, ND. They moved to Flasher and later to Lemmon, ND, where he worked on a farm. They moved to Leavenworth in 1941 where he worked for the Lamb-Davis Lumber Co., and later for Al Moltke Logging, Jack Ruth Logging and Hank Brown Logging until 1956 when he was hired as a patrolman with the Leavenworth Police Department.

He served as chief of police until 1964 when he started Cecil Mathena's Excavation which he operated until 1967. He later was employed by the Leavenworth Fruit Co., until his retirement in the late 1970s.

Mr. Mathena was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Leavenworth.

Survivors include his wife, at home; three daughters, Ramona "Mona" Richardson of Tillamook, Ore., Carolyn Barnes and Julie Larsen, both of Leavenworth; two sons, Mike, East Wenatchee, and Daryl, Leavenworth; one brother, Clarence, Kent; 17 grandchildren; and sex great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by nine sisters and six brothers.
