James Thomas Herod is the son of Daniel McCarty Herod Sr. and Mary L White. Daniel Sr. came to Texas with his wife and their family. Along with Daniel Sr's family came his 2 brothers James and Josiah and their families. Daniel McCarty Herod Sr. purchased 2 sections of land (about 1000 acres) being the North West boundary of present Grapeland. Brother Josiah purchased land joining on the east to Red Town Road. The Herod men were enrolled in Capt Pridgen's Elkhart Horse Calvary Company at Daily Texas June 22, 1861. After the war was over and the slaves were freed, Daniel Herod Sr. Deeded tracks of land to all his freed slaves.
