Skating was one way she expressed herself before a traffic accident ended her life.

For much of her young life, Stephanie "Sam" McKay touched her family and friends through her art and skill as a figure skater.

To many, she was an exuberant spirit who made life more pleasurable.

The 14-year-old's life was cut short Thursday when Stephanie died at St. Francis Hospital after being injured in a car accident the day before.

She was a passenger in a car that turned in front of a Union Public Schools garbage truck at 71st Street and Garnett Road about 6:15 a.m., Tulsa Police Officer Leland Ashley said.

Police at the scene of the crash reported that she had died, but paramedics were able to revive her. Tests on Thursday morning revealed no brain activity, and she was taken off life support.

The car's driver, Rebecca Fairchild, 20, was hospitalized for minor injuries, EMSA spokeswoman Tina Wells said.

The driver of the garbage truck reportedly was not injured.

Jan and Michael McKay of Broken Arrow are devastated about their daughter's death but say they feel fortunate to have been the parents of such a talented child who found joy in art, skating and the people she loved.

"Michael and I feel very blessed that we had her as a gift for 14 years," Jan McKay said Thursday evening. "She was everything you would want in a daughter — a very beautiful young lady."

Stephanie, a student at Union Intermediate High School, was a member of the Tulsa Figure Skating Club and had medaled at competitions across the country.

She also loved to paint and draw.

She was on her way to ice-skating practice when the collision occurred.

Boyko Alexiev, Stephanie's former coach, and Kathy Gibson, an adult figure skater, said that in recent months, Stephanie was moving away from competitions to focus on skating that was more artistic and performance-oriented.

Gibson used to skate early in the mornings and frequently found herself taking breaks to watch Stephanie practice her routines.

"She was very dramatic," she said. "She could pull you into her performance.

"I will miss her smiles, her energy and her spiritual perspective."

Judy Banner, a family friend, described Stephanie as a very giving person with a strong Christian faith.

"She was not your typical teenager," she said. "She was very moral, wise and was a role model for younger kids."

Another family friend, Califf Lewis, was Stephanie's group leader in a Bible study class.

Just a week ago he had discussed death with Stephanie, and she had told him that she didn't fear it because she knew she would "go to heaven," he said.

The news of Stephanie's death was especially hard for Kimberly Richard, 15, who had known her since before they entered elementary school, she said.

Richard said many of Stephanie's friends are struggling with her loss.

"Everyone just can't believe it," she said. "She was such a great person.

"We love her and will miss her very much."

Counselors were made available to Stephanie's classmates after the accident, Union Superintendent Cathy Burden said, adding that she expects the school to be in "grieving mode" Friday.

A memorial fund has been set up in Stephanie's name. Contributions can be made at any Bank of Oklahoma location.

McKAY - Stephanie Anne, As it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage, now as always, Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or death. For to me, to live is Christ, to die is gain." "Only one life twill soon be past, only what's done for Christ will last", is how Stephanie Anne McKay, (Sam), lived her full and complete life. Her family loved her dearly, and she had many wonderful loving friends. She was a beautiful young lady, both inside and out, and lived life to the fullest (Philippians 1:20-21). Throughout her life, she had great faith in Jesus Christ, always under God's grace, certain of her eternal security.

Sam was blessed with many gifts; she was a beautiful figure skater, a fabulous artist, a great student, loved to read, but struggled at volleyball! Stephanie was always happy to share her time to help others. Her family and friends will cherish their memories of her.

She was given to us on February 24th, 1994, Dallas, TX. Stephanie McKay was promoted to Heaven on October 9th, 2008, Tulsa OK. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Wednesday, October 15, 2008, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 6767 South Mingo Road, Tulsa, OK. 918-492-1771. In lieu of flowers, donations are being accepted at The Stephanie McKay Memorial Fund in her name through the Bank of Oklahoma.

Sam's Prayer written the evening of Tuesday, October 7th, the night before the accident (as written) Dear Heavenly Father, Lord I thank you for sending your son to die for all of my sins. I ask Lord, that you please be with them. Please take care of them, and show them the way, because I'm more than sure that their just a bit lost. Please help them see what they can become, and what they can do. I pray for the Bible Study. They've decided to continue it, but I'm not sure if thats such a good idea. It seems to me that it's run its corse, and needs to call itself what it is, which is a fellowship. I pray for America. Please, please do whats best for us. Don't let Obama get into office. I don't think he has a clue. Pleas do whats best for us, and help me to accept it, what-ever it may be. Lord, I also prey for myself. I'm having trouble dedicating myself to studieing your word. Please give me that extra push of motivation to really get into your word. Lord I ask that you will help me get through this next year in a half. The freedom calls to me. It's taunting me. Well, maybe not quite that dramatic, but I do crave to be on the same level as my friends. This is a life long test, I know. Please help me pass and mature. I really want to be spiritually, as well as humanly mature. Please help me achieve this. In Jesus' name -- Amen Stephanie Anne McKay
