This community was saddened by the sudden death of Jacob L. Ames, Jr., which occurred Friday night while he attended lodge meeting. He was born at South Unity, January 19, 1889, the son of Jacob and Ada (Simmons) Ames. In 1912, he married Bernice Cates of Thorndike, who died in January 1940. They lived in Troy for a short time, later moving to Unity.

He was a member of Invictious Lodge, IOOF, the Encampment, and of Favori Rebekah Lodge and very active in all. He was past chief patriarch of the Encampment, past noble grand of Invictious Lodge and degree master of Favori Rebekah Lodge.

He is survived by a son, Clayton of Hartford, Conn.; a grandson, Clayton Jr. of Unity; a sister, Mrs. Mary E. Kidder of Gorham; a brother, Clayton T. Ames of Saugus, Mass.

Funeral services were held at the Unity Union Church Monday at 2 o'clock with Rev. Frederick Champlin of Albion officiating. The Odd Fellows and Rebekahs attended in a body. The bearers were Harold Glines, George Meservie, George Reynolds, Will Libby, James Elwell and Claude Mussey. Interment was in the Pond Cemetery in Unity.

Among those from out of town attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cates, Richard Farwell, Mr. and Mrs. Will Libby, Myra Tweedie, and Mrs. Rena Ward all of Thorndike; Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Shields of Knox; Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Ward, B. L. Myrick and Lloyd Myrick of Troy; Leslie Ames of Fairfield; Charles T. Ames of Saugus, Mass.; Mrs. Mary E. Kidder of Gorham. The beautiful flowers were a silent tribute of the love and esteem in which he was held.
