DASHED TO DEATH AT HORSE'S HEELS

Frightened Beast Dragged R. Percy Hoerner a Swatara Butcher, a Quarter Mile Over Stony Road

EVERY BONE IN HIS BODY WAS BROKEN

Thrown from the back of a vicious colt, his foot catching in a chain trace, R. Percy Hoerner, aged 22 years, of Lower Swatara township, was dragged to a horrible death yesterday afternoon. After running through several fields and down the road to a neighboring farm house, a distance of almost a quarter mile, the colt was caught. Whether the young man's death came when he was thrown is not known.

When the colt was stopped there was not a whole bone in the body and the young man's skull was crushed to a pulp, and scarcely any clothing covered the remains. The colt was literally covered with blood.

Mr. Hoerner, who is a son of 'Squire William Hoerner, assists his father on the farm, which is located about five miles from this city on the Union Deposit road, and in butchering. He worked all day at ploughing and had stopped about 1 o'clock to assist in getting ready to attend the East End market this morning. One horse, which had been on the farm for some time, was started homeward and young Hoerner, it is thought, jumped on the back of the colt to ride home, as was his custom. The colt was frisky and probably threw the young man off. No one saw the accident nor knew that anything had happened until the colt was seen dashing down the road dragging Hoerner's body. Passing the Hoerner home the horse ran to a neighboring farm, where he was caught.

The body was placed in a barn until an undertaker was summoned, when it was taken home. The news of the accident spread rapidly and caused much regret as the young man was very popular. Besides his parents he is survived by three brothers and five sisters. The funeral will take place Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. Services will be held and interment made at Shoop's Church.
