Thomas E. Dean, age 64, of Monticello passed away at 3:40 p.m. Sunday, October 5, 2008, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Thomas was born October 9, 1943, in Urbana, the son of Charles A. and Gladys (Hauersperger) Dean. He married Jean Kay Shields on September 9, 1962, in Fisher. She survives.

Also surviving are his children, Anthony Dean of Kirkland, Wash., Vincent Dean and Rebecca Bursott, both of Metamora, and Betsy Kuper of Jackson, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren; and four sisters, Mary Myrick of Rantoul, Lois Cady of Gibson City, Patricia Bryan of Mahomet and Kathryn Greenwood of Mulckytown.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother (Jerry) and an infant brother and sister.

Thomas was employed as a Service Engineer at Caterpillar for 38 years. He was a charter member of the Berkmore United Methodist Church in Lawrenceville, Ga., a charter member of the Willow Hill United Methodist Church in Germantown Hills, Ill., and current member of the Monticello United Methodist Church.

He was past member of the Germantown Hills School Board and Scout Master, Worth Township trustees, Monticello United Methodist Church Board of Trustees, founding member of the Piatt County Habitat for Humanity and Faith in Action, and went on mission trips to Alabama, Alaska, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and the Czech Republic.
