Roxie Stanworth Gifford, 95, passed away on September 20, 2008, in St. George. She was born March 5, 1913, in Hurricane to Emanuel Nutter and Ursella Maria Stanworth.
She was the sixth of eight children and was the last survivor of her family. Roxie attended school in Hurricane. As a young girl, Roxie loved to work the family farm with her father. Roxie also worked after school in the only drug store in town which was owned by her father and the local doctor.

On December 17, 1929, she married Jessie LaVell Gifford in Parowan. Their marriage was later sealed in the St. George Temple. The couple lived in Springdale, Cedar City, and Provo, finally returning to Cedar City, where they continued to reside for the remainder of their lives. Roxie and LaVell were a testament to love and hard work. It seems they both learned that from the beginning even though they married very young. They sacrificed their whole lives to help others in need. Roxie and LaVell were never able to have children, but they were wonderful surrogate grandparents to many friends and family. Roxie enjoyed going with her husband sightseeing around the area in their Jeep. They also loved going to their property at Panguitch Lake where they would fish, hunt or just relax. She also enjoyed getting her hands dirty in their beautiful flower and vegetable garden.

Many people were blessed by the fruits of their labor. Roxie continued this hard work until she was no longer able. Roxie and LaVell were married 68 ½ years. They were hoping to make it to 70 years, but unfortunately LaVell passed away before they reached that milestone. Roxie was active in the LDS Church, serving in many capacities. She was a devoted visiting teacher, nursery teacher and primary teacher and loved to teach the Gospel to the young. The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of Ridgeview Gardens Assisted Living and Kolob Care and Rehab. Roxie touched many lives that she came in contact with. She was funny, humble, folksy and just adorable. She was also one of the best listeners – you couldn't help but love her.

Roxie is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their families. Roxie was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and all seven of her siblings, 4 brothers and 2 sisters, Ivan, Thomas Irving, Gladys, Beatrice, Vauntral, Delwin and Lamona.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 25, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Southern Utah Mortuary. Internment will be in the Cedar City Cemetery, under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary
