Friday April 12th, Nathan Wilkinson, age 74 years, lost his house and almost all its contents by fire. The girls were getting dinner and were about to sit down to eat when the house was discovered on fire, near the stove flue. A strong wind was blowing from the northwest, which sent the fire all over the house in a few minutes. The logs in this house were hewed by Philip Wise, father of the late J.N. Wise, in 1811, for William Wilkinson. N. Wilkinson rebuilt the house in 1855. the old stone chimney built by John Hicks still stands. the ancient things lost were a pocket compass that guided William Wilkinson to this country in 1803, a cupboard that was handed down through the Sheppard family for over a hundred years, ear rings, breast pins, rings and many other old-fashioned articles, many of which had crossed the waters and were given to the girls as keepsakes by their mother, were consumed. Mr. Wilkinson regrets very much the loss of his old bible and spectacles.

Married Mary Miller May 20, 1856 in Cape Girardeau County.
