GEN. JOS. BOBLETER, NEW ULM'S MAYOR DEAD
Brigade Commander of the Minnesota National Guard Passes Away Friday Morning. Public Minded Citizen. Successful Business Man, Editor, Politician and Soldier Closes a Life Full of Activity.
An Honorable and Interesting Military Record.

A gloom was cast over the entire city Friday morning when the sad news was rapidly being spread that Mayor Gen. Jos. Bobleter had died. Everybody realized at once that an active life, full of struggle, ambition and success had come to a close, that a representative man, such as any community might justly be proud of had departed, that a heart replete with sympathy, a mind keen in its perception had forever ceased to be among the fellow men, in whose midst the deceased for over half a century had been a prominent factor, socially, politically and in the various pursuits of a complicated public career.

Joseph Bobleter was born in Austria, April 19, 1846. In 1858 he immigrated to Dubuque, Iowa; attended school there until September, 1862, when he enlisted in the 13th United States infantry, and in the following fall was discharged on account of sickness; re-enlisted for one year in December, 1863, in the United States navy and served during the Red River expedition. After the defeat of General Banks at Pleasant Hill, he, with others, volunteered to carry dispatches on a small transport to Admiral Porter and General A. J. Smith, who were then within about sixty miles of Shreveport, was severely wounded in the right leg, and barely escaped losing the right foot. At the expiration of his term of enlistment Mr. Bobleter re-enlisted in Company L, Second Iowa cavalry and served until October, 1865. The following December he enlisted in the 13th United States infantry, but was detailed on recruiting service with Major Yates, at Dubuque, Iowa; finally joined his regiment at Jefferson Barracks; was discharged from service in 1868. He then located in New Ulm, and has since resided here. Embarked in the drug business in 1872 with also a stock of stationery. Was appointed postmaster; re-appointed in 1877 and again in 1881.
